About Plastic Film Perforations

One effective way to customize your packaging product is by adding plastic film perforations. At TDI, we offer a variety of perforation types in our custom poly bags, sheeting, and tubing.

The ideal perforation depends on several factors, including the gauge, format, and intended use. So let’s take a closer look at the different types available and how they’re commonly used.

What are plastic film perforations?

In the manufacturing industry, perforations are often referred to as “perfs.” During the process, a die-cut machine punches small, closely spaced holes into a sheet of plastic. These holes make it easy to tear the material open when needed.

Types of Perforations

Here are the most common types:

plastic film perforations

Horizontal or Vertical Punches:

A straight line of perforations – either horizontal or vertical –  allows consumers to easily access the contents by simply ripping it open.

This type of packaging is typically designed for single use, as it is not resealable. Here, its primary purpose often includes safeguarding against contamination or tampering.

Easy-Tear versus Hard-Tear:

Easy-tear perforations feature closely spaced openings, allowing for effortless opening. Therefore, they are ideal for lightweight items, such as feathers.

By comparison, hard-tear perforations have holes spaced farther apart, which require more strength to open. That’s why this type of perf is better for heavier materials, like metal screws.

Tear-Notch:

A tear-notch is a small slit located on one or more sides of the packaging. As a result, this simple feature allows the user to easily tear the package open with minimal effort.

How Resin Material Affects Perf Location:

Each type of poly material  has unique characteristics that influence the placement of perforation. For example, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) offers greater tensile strength, so that vertical perforations are the most effective choice.

In contrast, horizontal perforations work best with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) which has different flexibility and strength properties.

For added convenience, TDI can add perforations to any type of flexible plastic packaging:

  • tubing or sleeves
  • sheeting
  • rolls (bags on rolls)
  • individual plastic bags

Applications of Plastic Film Perforations

Below you will find some examples of how different industries utilize perforations:

Medical and Healthcare:

In the medical and healthcare sectors, an easy-tear strip not only safeguards the sterility of the contents but also allows staff to quickly access essential tools during an emergency.

Food Industry:

Businesses in the food industry commonly add tear notches to ensure safe, single-use packaging. By doing so, they guarantee that the contents remain fresh and unopened.

Industrial uses:

With bags on rolls, consumers simply tear along the perforated line to pull off a new bag. This design makes it convenient to grab individual bags quickly and efficiently.
